How Many and What Kind of Scholarships Will be Awarded
and to Whom?
Dr. Calandra Green’s Memorial Scholarship is excited to
announce the award of four $1,500 scholarships to qualified Oakland
Community College Nursing students.
These scholarships will be given to students who demonstrate exceptional
leadership qualities through their involvement on campus and in the community,
by breaking down racial and cultural stereotypes, and by promoting unity and
equity among all people. Dr. Green served
the Pontiac Community as a nurse for more than 28 years. The peak of her success was her appointment the
first African American woman to the position of Oakland County’s Health Officer.
Dr. Green envisioned that public health would be rooted in the community. She used her knowledge, skills, and
commitment to move public health forward to achieve the goal of having healthy
residents.
Who can Apply and How?
To qualify for the Dr. Calandra Green Memorial Scholarship
an individual must:
Be enrolled, have completed 30 credit hours, and be
maintaining a 3.0 academic average in either the Nursing (ADN) – Traditional
Track or Transitional LPN to ADN Track (TPN) at Oakland Community College. Preference
for these scholarships will be given to one student who resides in the City of
Auburn Hills; one student who resides in the City of Pontiac; one student who
resides in Waterford Township; and one student who resides in White Lake
Township.
Your application should highlight your involvement and
leadership in working to promote equity among all people in your community
and/or campus, and to foster an environment rich in diversity and
multiculturalism.
If he/she/they is awarded the scholarship, an individual MUST be present and
available for two of Holiday Extravaganza’s events, including the Scholarship
Ceremony and Parade, both of which are in downtown Pontiac on the morning of Saturday, December 7,2024.
Submit your application and 500 word
essay on “Why I chose the field of Nursing” no later than 12:00 noon on
Monday, November 4, 2024. The essay must be typed, in the applicant’s own words,

How are the Recipients Selected?
A three-person committee that includes representatives from Dr.
Green’s family and a member from the Holiday Extravaganza’s Board of Directors
will select awardees based on their essays and a personal interview that the committee
will convene and conduct. The selection
by this three-person committee will be final.
